A tea can help eliminate unwanted phlegm from the stomach and can help settle an upset stomach. Regular use of the tea is recommended for gallstones. Chicory is good for conditions caused by excess uric acid such as gout, rheumatics and joint stiffness. It has also been used as a wash for boils and sores. The sap of the stems can be used to treat poison ivy and sunburns. One study found that chicory has a mild sedative effect on the central nervous system and may help reduce the stimulating effect of coffee when the two are combined.
