Witch hazel is used externally as an alcohol extract for insect bites, varicose veins, burns, hemorrhoids, and to stop bleeding wounds.  It is used internally to help stop bleeding from the lungs, uterus, and other internal organs.  It can be used as a mouthwash for bleeding gums and inflammation in the mouth and throat.  Compresses can be applied to the skin to treat headaches, sores, skin irritations, insect bites, sunburn, other burns, and infections.  It is a safe treatment with a mild and gentle action.
The leaves and bark of witch hazel contain tannins that are known to have astringent properties.  Studies have found vasoconstrictive activity in an alcohol fluid extract.
