Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia & purpurea)
Part Used: Rhizome and whole of the plant
Effective Forms: Tea & Tincture
Echinacea has been recognized as one of the best alteratives for detoxifying the blood. It is the prime remedy to help the body rid itself of microbial infections. It is effective against both bacterial and viral attacks. It works on the lymphatic system and building the immune system.
In conjunction with other herbs it may be used for any infection anywhere in the body. For example, in combination with Yarrow or Bearberry it will effectively stop cystitis. It is especially useful for infections of the upper respiratory tract such as bronchitis, tonsillitis and for catarrhal conditions of the the nose and sinus.
Extensive scientific research has been undertaken on the plant in the last 20 years. The results have indicated antibiotic activity, cortisone-like activity, assistance in synovial membrane healing, supporting of collagen through hyaluronic acid protection, promotion of wound healing, stimulation of T-cell lymphocytes and tumour suppression. In general it may be used widely and safely.
Decoction (Rhizome) 1-2 teaspoons in one cup of water and bring slowly to the boil. Simmer for 10-15 minutes. Drink three times a day.
Tea (Herb): 1-2 teaspoons per cup of water and infuse for 10-15 minutes.
Tincture: 1-4 ml three times daily.
